The Levens estate has tenanted farms in close proximity to the Hall.  The lush grassland of South Lakeland is ideal for rearing dairy cows, providing high quality grazing.  On Shap Fell, and near Appleby, there are two hill farms dedicated to rearing the hardy indigenous northern breeds of sheep – Swaledale crosses.  The larger of the hill farms is run on an organic basis and the other one is part of the Country Stewardship Scheme.  There are several SSSIs on both farms.  Levens estate also maintains woodlands which support a diversity of wildlife.
